Unite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD)
Staff Organizer – Midwest location strongly preferred, remote possible.
UAWD is seeking one full-time organizer to begin work in January 2025. UAWD has played a leading role in recent reform efforts in the UAW, campaigning successfully for One Member, One Vote and leading the effort to elect our UAW Members United slate. The caucus is now prepared to organize for the long haul and transform the UAW from the bottom up to build a democratic union and take on the companies. We are looking for an organizer who is committed to this vision for building rank-and-file power in the UAW. We expect this position will be renewed on an annual basis.
Responsibilities:
- Take direction from and give advice to the UAWD Steering Committee on matters relating to caucus operation and organizing within the UAW.
- Recruit UAW members to UAWD, while retaining and deepening involvement of current members.
- Recruit, develop, and support UAW members at the local level, particularly in auto and manufacturing sectors, in developing local rank-and-file movements and Local UAWD Chapters, running for Local office, and winning improvements in working conditions.
- Work on large-scale campaigns, such as fighting concessionary national agreements or electing International Executive Board members, when opportunities arise.
- Develop and run educational programming, online or in person, about topics including basic organizing skills, running for local office, and developing democratic union administrations.
- Assist with running phone banks, text banks, and facilitating meetings as needed.
- Assist member-led caucus committees and initiatives with administration, meetings, and organizing support.
- Assist with caucus functions such as communications, data management, fundraising, and administrative tasks, as needed.
- Help build UAWD into a powerful caucus capable of winning reforms, building rank-and-file movements at the local level, and transforming the UAW into a militant and democratic union.
Qualifications:
- Highly motivated, self-starting individuals with a strong commitment to rank-and-file unionism.
- Good track record of working cooperatively with organizers from diverse backgrounds.
- Previous experience with labor organizing either as a staff organizer or as a union member with significant responsibility.
- Familiarity with web-based database and organizing tools such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, Airtable, Mailchimp etc.
- Living in the Midwest is strongly preferred, and the Detroit area is a plus, to enable in-person organizing in areas with a high concentration of UAW members. Other locations are a possibility for highly qualified candidates, and they should expect significant remote work.
- Experience leading or participating in a member-led organizing committee or local caucus is a plus.
- Familiarity with the UAW, automotive, manufacturing, or higher education sectors is a plus.
- Strong fundraising skills to help UAWD continue to grow is a plus.
- Knowledge of labor law for union members is a plus.
Working closely with our other staff organizer will be essential. The full-time salary for this position is $54,000 per year, with healthcare benefits (Health Reimbursement Arrangement). As a growing caucus, we hope to improve the compensation and benefits that we are able to offer our organizers in the future. Please email your resume and cover letter to [email protected]. We will begin contacting applicants for interviews beginning on December 9, and close applications by December 16. People of all gender identities and expressions and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
