The union representing Maryland Legal Aid employees has filed an unfair labor practices complaint, claiming the nonprofit firm’s executive team removed four top attorneys last month to prevent staffers from expressing concerns about reopening offices during the coronavirus pandemic, an act protected by federal labor law.
“Maryland Legal Aid’s actions are harmful to clients, devastating to staff, and destructive to the organization. The terminations are clearly motivated by a desire to discourage union activity and to quash the expression of dissent more broadly,” said Pam Smith, president of the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, United Auto Workers Local 2320, in a statement.
