At the August 14th, 2021 UAWD Steering Committee meeting, Chairperson Scott Houldieson informed the committee that Brother Mike DiGiuseppe had sent in his resignation from his Trustee position, effective immediately.
Per UAWD by-laws, “should a vacancy occur on the UAWD Steering Committee, and more than 90 days remain in the term of office, the UAWD Steering Committee will appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of the term of office, except in the case of a vacancy in the position of the UAWD Steering Committee Chairperson.”
As Brother DiGiuseppe’s term of office was to end at the 2022 UAWD Annual Meeting, more than 90 days remained in the term of office. Thus, the UAWD Steering Committee voted to appoint Sister Martha Grevatt to fulfill the remainder of Brother DiGiuseppe’s Trustee term.
“Brother DiGiuseppe is one of the most dedicated and honest trade unionists I know,” UAWD Co-Chair Justin Mayhugh said. “It has been a pleasure to work with Mike over the last year. The UAWD Steering Committee will miss his leadership. He remains determined to see One Member One Vote become a reality for our union. However, seeing as Brother DiGiuseppe is a Vice President of UAW Local 259, I have complete faith that he will continue standing up for, not only his Local membership, but for UAW members everywhere.”
Sister Martha Grevatt had been serving as a Retiree Representative on the UAWD Steering Committee for which she was elected at the 2020 Annual Meeting. Her appointment leaves a vacancy for Retiree Representative that will be filled by election at the UAWD Annual Meeting on September 19th, 2021.
“Sister Grevatt has been instrumental in UAWD’s efforts to organize for a more democratic and equitable UAW,” Chairperson Houldieson said. “The role of a Trustee in any organization is crucial, and with Martha’s knowledge, experience, and passion for our union and the labor movement, I have full confidence she will do an outstanding job.”
Elections for the following positions on the Steering Committee will be held at the UAWD Annual Meeting; Co-Chair (1), Trustee (1), Retiree Representative (1), and Member-at-Large (1)
