The election vendor concluded the first day of referendum vote tabulation at midnight on November 30, 2021.
With roughly 18% of the total ballots counted, 69.6% of voters supported a move to the direct election method of electing UAW International Executive Board officers. Out of the 25,205 ballots counted, 17,552 were cast for direct elections, while 7,656 UAW members cast their votes for the delegate voting system.
It was an extremely promising first day for supporters of direct elections. Perhaps, most notable from day one were the results at UAW Local 600 located in Dearborn, Michigan. At the amalgamated Local, long considered a stronghold for the Administration Caucus, 69% of voters cast their ballots in favor of direct elections.
“No doubt, it was a great start,” said UAWD Chairperson Scott Houldieson. “But there are still a lot of votes to be counted and anything can happen.”
Supporters of direct elections also scored decisive victories at UAW Local 862 (Ford Kentucky Truck and Louisville Assembly Plants) with 81% of the vote, UAW Local 685 (Stellantis, Kokomo Engine Plant) at 79%, and UAW Local 2865 (Academic Workers, University of California) where 83% of voters backed a move to direct elections.
Vote tabulation is being held in Hamden, Connecticut, at the election vendor’s facility. Each side of the referendum issue is able to have observers to watch the tabulation process.
Heading into the second day of vote tabulation, direct elections currently hold a 9,896 lead.
The referendum election vendor reported that 142,201 total ballots were received.
