MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – Howmet Aerospace has laid off nearly a quarter of workers at its Whitehall facilities, citing the ongoing cost of coronavirus, according to paperwork filed with the state.
Howmet, which manufactures parts for the aerospace industry, laid off 625 workers, out of almost 3,000 employed at multiple casting plants across Whitehall. About half of those layoffs are voluntary, temporary layoffs, permitted through unionized workers’ collective bargaining agreement, that are likely to become permanent, according to the company’s filing with the state.
