10,890 Student Reasearchers at the University of California voted in a strike authorization vote with 97.5% of them voting yes. The group announced the outcome on social media in the early morning Saturday.
Student Researchers United is a group of students working in research positions across the University of California organizing to better their working conditions through forming a union.
The Univserity of California has continally refused to recognize SRU-UAW despite the group submitting over 12,000 signed unionization cards in May of 2021.
According to an article by The Aggie: “On Oct. 28, student researchers and postdocs congregated on the corner of 2nd and A St. and marched to Mrak Hall to demand that the UC recognize Student Researchers United-UAW (SRU-UAW). This push for unionization began in May 2021, with over 12,000 student researchers submitting authorization cards to form the union.
According to those at the rally, the protest is a culmination of frustrations with financial instability, a lack of healthcare, longer work hours and no protection against discrimination and harassment.”
