Profit Sharing and the Road to Union Solidarity

This resolution was passed at the 2023 July Membership Meeting.

Whereas GM CEO Barra brags about GM sharing its profits with the workforce,

Whereas GM doesn’t share its profits with its entire workforce but in fact carries its two-tier policies into profit sharing, for example, GM Subsystems Manufacturing, LLC., get only 25% of the profit checks, and non-GM employees who contribute to those profits – the temporary, part time and contract workers – receive no profit sharing checks,

Whereas profit sharing creates unacceptable inequities within GM and between GM, Ford and Stellantis UAW members, and UAW members at parts suppliers, and violates the basic principle of “equal pay for equal work,”

Whereas profit sharing puts “legacy” or Tier 1 UAW members in the unconscionable position of profiting off the super profits extracted off lower-tier workers, which is inherently anti-Union,

Whereas profit sharing incentivizes UAW members to support GM decisions to continue production of highly profitable gasoline powered vehicles which at the same time are a detriment to the planet and therefore a detriment to the long-term interests of UAW members, their families and communities,

Whereas UAW President Shawn Fain has gone on record, stating “it’s time for GM and others to share [their profits] with the workforce by ending wage tiers, ensuring job security and reestablishing cost-of-living allowances,”

Therefore, be it resolved that,

UAWD advocate and sponsor study, analysis, discussion and debate to develop a policy statement regarding the inclusion/exclusion of profit-sharing provisions as they pertain to the upcoming negotiations between the UAW and GM (and Ford and Stellantis) and other employers more generally.
