Resolution: Oppose Deportations: An Injury to One is an Injury to All

Submitted by Dianne Feeley

WHEREAS historically people have fled to the United States to escape war, violence, poverty and climate disasters; and

WHEREAS U.S. foreign and trade policies, often designed to support corporations and not U.S. residents, have often exacerbated the problems workers face, and

WHEREAS the U.S. immigration system has not been updated in almost half a century,

WHEREAS immigrants to the United States must await hearings that may take years, and therefore building a life here in the U.S.

WHEREAS immigrants, living precariously in their new circumstances, are forced to take whatever jobs they can find,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the UAW, like the AFL-CIO, opposes the deportation of immigrant workers, who make up almost five percent of the U.S. workforce, and are making contributions to our economy and our society. Just as we oppose inferior wages and benefits In our workplace, we oppose inferior conditions for all workers. An injury to one is an injury to all!
