Resolution: Taking a proactive, unified approach to the November presidential elections
Submitted by Frank Hammer, UAW 909 retiree
Whereas UAW members as part the broader labor movement are confronted with the stark choice of Biden or Trump in the November 5, 2024 presidential election, along with 2-3 marginal third party candidates
Whereas both Trump’s Republican and Biden’s Democratic parties represent the monied interests of finance and corporate capital which, in the extreme pursuit of profit, are determined to dominate over the aspirations of the working class and oppressed nationalities here and abroad
Whereas Trump and the MAGA cult followers are determined to establish a Christian white nationalist, racist, patriarchal, authoritarian, pro-Zionist, anti-environment, anti-labor and fascist regime via the November election – or by other means – as part of a rising tide of fascist and neo-fascist parties across the globe,
Whereas the labor movement has been unable and/or unwilling to build a political movement for a Labor Party, and/or promote credible candidates to represent the working class’ independent interests in opposition to the two pro-business, war-mongering parties
Whereas in the absence of a political party that can effectively represent the working class against the rising threat of authoritarianism and militarism and effectively fend off these threats
Therefore, be it resolved,
That the UAWD sponsor one or more forums/debates, as needed, between now and the November election to educate our own members and the UAW rank and file about the origins and development of fascism, and the threat it poses to our own interests and that of the broad working masses
And be it further resolved,
That the UAWD promote these events with the goal of unifying broad sectors of UAW members and workers in general around an effective strategy for the November elections which will further the goals of our members and of the US working class for the short and long term.
