Plan to Set UAWD Organizational Priorities for 2023

The following resolution passed at the UAWD Membership Meeting held on March 12, 2023. Whereas:

  • UAWD is a democratic organization with our membership as our “highest authority.”
  • The last time the UAWD membership passed a strategic plan was a resolution from January 2022, which set out a plan for our delegate and IEB campaigns, but not beyond.
  • Our Steering Committee has recently approved a plan to launch our Organizing Committee, but it does not include a strategic vision for setting our organizational priorities for the year.
  • As we enter a period with a newly elected IEB, hundreds of significant UAW Local Union elections, and Big 3 contract negotiations, it is crucial that we build democratic support for our UAWD program through a broad membership priority-setting process. This will enable us to maximize the use of our limited resources and build on our progressive program at the Local Union and International level.

Be it Resolved, the UAWD membership instructs our Steering Committee to do the following: 1. In late April or early May 2023, call a Special General Membership Meeting, under Article IV, Section 6 of the UAWD Bylaws, to construct a document that sets forth a specific plan of action for the membership and leadership of UAWD in 2023 and beyond:

a. The meeting will be announced as for this express purpose: To establish UAWD strategic and organizational priorities, in order to provide direction to our Steering Committee, Organizing Committee, and staff for 2023 and beyond;

b. Consistent with our Bylaws, this meeting will not consider any business other than proposals pertaining to this purpose;

c. Member proposals for consideration at this meeting will be due one week prior.

2. In the weeks preceding the above Special GMM, call at least two informal brainstorming sessions, at different times to allow workers on different shifts to attend, to enable members to consider and discuss priorities with each other. The goal of these meetings will be to generate concrete proposals to submit for the meeting above.
