“Zero Emissions” GM Plans ICE Vehicle Production Through 2035

This resolution was passed at the 2023 July Membership Meeting.

Whereas GM CEO Barra recently announced that GM will invest in 5 North American plants to produce the next iteration of its ICE trucks and SUVs for another 12 years until 2035,

Whereas, by doing so, GM is reneging on prior commitments to move expeditiously toward “zero emissions” across its entire fleet of vehicles by 2035 to reduce carbon emissions which are accelerating the global climate and environmental crisis,

Whereas the UAWD has taken the position that autoworkers must embark on a trajectory to combat the climate crisis, all the while demanding that autoworkers lives and livelihoods not be sacrificed but instead be included in a “just transition,”

Therefore, be it resolved that,
UAWD reject GM’s profit driven motives extending production of ICE vehicles for well into the middle of the next decade, all the while demanding that displaced UAW members be guaranteed jobs in a renewable energy economy, including electrified trucks and SUVs.

UAWD will post this position and resolution on its website and will task our Electric Vehicle Committee to consider further action that can be taken on this issue.
