Education to Continue Transforming the UAW

This resolution was passed at the 2024 March Membership Meeting.

Whereas, effective organizing around shop-floor issues and confronting management requires that members are equipped with knowledge of their contract, the grievance procedure, and organizing skills to build shop-floor power with their coworkers;

Whereas, educational events and ongoing training and support are necessary for UAWD to achieve its goals of transforming local unions and electing additional reformers to the IEB.

Be it resolved that UAWD will develop educational programming specifically designed to equip UAW members to organize around shop-floor issues, effectively challenge management, and transform their local unions;

Be it resolved that UAWD shall host both workshops open to any UAW member and ongoing programs for specific groups. Examples of workshops are “How to Run for Local Office” or “How to Hold a 10-Minute Meeting”. Examples of ongoing programs include: “Local Election Bootcamp”, “Demystifying the UAW Constitution and Bylaws for rank and file activists” and “Shop Committee Support Network”;

Be it resolved that these programs may involve labor educators or experienced guest facilitators when appropriate, both in design and facilitation;

Be it resolved that the Steering Committee and Staff bear ultimate responsibility for developing and running these educational programs, but will delegate some program design and facilitation to the Education Committee, and develop materials in consultation with the Organizing Committee.
