The UAWD Steering Committee issues the following statement on the IEB Vote to Remove Departments from Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock.

UAWD was founded on the principles of transparency and fighting the abuse of power. We hold all members of our union to this standard, even if we have endorsed them for office. The misconduct of Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock has harmed the membership of our union.

Last week, 11 of the 14 members of the International Executive Board (IEB) voted to reassign several departments that previously belonged to Secretary-Treasurer Mock, including the Women’s Department and the Technical, Office, & Professional (TOP) Department. This move did not include departments assigned to her under the UAW Constitution, such as Accounting. The UAWD Steering Committee has spoken with numerous sources present at the IEB meeting who have corroborated what occurred at the meeting and the allegations below.

The vote occurred after a report by UAW’s Compliance Director, which showed that Secretary-Treasurer Mock repeatedly abused her authority and violated UAW policies:

  • She withheld approval of routine expenditures in an attempted exchange for votes on the IEB. At least two IEB members have reported these actions to the Monitor.
  • She refused to approve routine purchases of supplies for the Stand Up Strike, hurting strike preparation.
  • She improperly denied staff’s legitimate reimbursement requests under the Travel & Expense Policy.
  • She refused to approve legitimate expenditures for ongoing organizing campaigns in a timely manner, risking the loss of NLRB elections and the waste of millions of dollars.

The UAWD Steering Committee encourages all members to request and review the IEB minutes. We are confident that these minutes will confirm the information above.

Secretary-Treasurer Mock’s abuses of authority have directly undermined militant, forward-looking initiatives that the UAW membership voted for, such as building a strong Big 3 contract campaign. As a democratic caucus, Secretary-Treasurer Mock was endorsed by our membership along with other members of our slate, and we as leadership do not unilaterally make decisions about rescinding endorsements. Our caucus will decide democratically whether further action is necessary.

In solidarity,

UAWD Steering Committee
