UAW Members United and Unite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD) jointly issue the following statement regarding the upcoming election of the UAW International Executive Board:

DAYTON, OHIO – The tabulation of ballots in the 2022 UAW International Executive Board elections is beginning today at a facility in Dayton, Ohio. The vote count is being run by the election vendor Merriman River Associates and supervised by the court-appointed UAW Monitor, who has overseen the election. These are the first-ever direct elections for top officers in history of the UAW, following the referendum vote last year that established One Member, One Vote.

The UAWD-backed UAW Members United candidates have sent a team of observers, as is permitted to all candidates and slates. They are ready to challenge ballots as needed to ensure that the vote count is run in a fair and accurate manner. Ballots were mailed out beginning October 17 and were due yesterday, November 28. UAWD and UAW Members United are publishing live results from the vote count, local by local, on their websites.

“This is a pivotal moment for the UAW. Our membership desperately needs a change from decades of concessionary contracts in times of record profits, and from corrupt leadership. We need to restore our willingness to confront the companies — and get rid of the top-down, business union mentality. And return power to the membership,” said Shawn Fain, candidate for President on the UAW Members United slate.

Following nominations at the UAW Constitutional Convention in July 2022, UAW Members United has campaigned aggressively to maximize visibility and build the movement for union reform. The candidates have met members at plant gates, handed out leaflets, and talked to rank-and-file workers about the need for reform in the UAW. They have also spoken to higher education workers, who are a growing segment of the UAW, and to UAW members in every sector of the union through virtual candidate forums sponsored by the UAW monitor.

The UAW Members United Slate consists of:

They have traveled extensively to meet-and-greet events organized by member-volunteers or to leaflet at the gates of plants in the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.

The tabulation of votes is expected to last up to one week. The swearing into office of the successful candidates will occur on a date to be determined in December 2022, except where runoff elections are needed to determine the winners.
